  6.    Welcome to our shareware effort, Mail Manager +Plus+!  This program
  7.    represents our continuing effort to add some of the new features to
  8.    the door that everyone has been asking for.  Unfortunately, new
  9.    features means added complexity.
  10.  
  11.    First, a quick overview of what all is included in the package:

  13.    HISTORY.DOC  - Everything that has changed since the release of the
  14.                   v1.3x series of the door.
  15.  
  16.    MAILMGR.DOC  - Instructions for setting up/using the door to its full
  17.                   capabilities.
  18.  
  19.    NETINFO.DOC  - How to use the QWK networking features of the door.
  20.                   (Definitely a separate subject in and of itself).

  22.    README.1ST   - This file - to tell you what you're getting into. <g>

  24.    REGISTER.DOC - To help you support the SHAREWARE concept!

  31.    MAILFIX.EXE  - Alternate purge/repair utility for *M.DEF's.
  32.    CFG2TXT.EXE  - Convert binary config file to text format.
  33.    TXT2CFG.EXE  - Convert text config file to MMGR binary format.
  34.    UPDATE.EXE   - Update Mail Manager v1.3x config file to Mail
  35.                   Manager +Plus+ format.
  36.    UPDATUSR.EXE - Update MAILMGR.USR to the new format of Mail
  37.                   Manager +Plus+.  (For users of v1.3x and below)
  38.    MMGRNODE.EXE - Nodelist compiler for FIDO netmail areas.
  39.    MMINDEX.EXE  - FIDO area message indexer to add to your nightly
  40.                   event.
  41.    MUSER.EXE    - User file editor for Mail Manager +Plus+'s binary
  42.                   user file, MAILMGR.USR.
  43.    MNET.EXE     - Conversion utility from QWK<->REP for QWK networks.

  82.    UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION:

  85.    Mail Manager has been updated frequently.  How long ago you picked up
  86.    your copy of Mail Manager will dictate just how much things have
  87.    changed since you last looked at the package.  A VERY brief overview:

  89.     1.01b - 09/92/91 - Initial release of the door.
  90.     1.01c - 10/02/91 - MailFix only - the basis of today's MailFix.
  91.     1.02a - 10/05/91 - 1,000 msgs per packet.
  92.     1.04  - 10/17/91 - Easier setup, bug fixes.
  93.     1.10  - 11/19/91 - Supports DESQview, and FOSSIL drivers.
  94.     1.20  - 12/23/91 - First good-sized rewrite - small changes throughout.
  95.     1.21  - 12/23/91 - Last minute bugfix to 1.20.
  96.     1.22  - 01/03/92 - Maintanence release to 1.22.
  97.     1.24  - 02/09/92 - Last maint. release of 1.2x series.

  107.     1.35  - 09/21/92 - Better support of RBBS 17.4, other fixes. [CURRENT]

  109.     2.00  - 08/15/92 - First MAJOR update of the door, first shareware.
  110.     2.01  - 08/15/92 - Last minute bugfix to newly-supported FIDO handling.
  111.     2.02  - 08/17/92 - Another quick maint. release to fix new code.
  112.     2.03  - 09/09/92 - A more generic update - tweaks across the board.
  113.     2.04  - 10/02/92 - Last generic tweak of 2.0 series.  Minor fixes.

  115.     3.00  - 01/15/93 - The first major update of "Plus" since the release
  116.                        of 2.00.  R)ead/reply and P)ost online, QWK networks.

  118.     v1.x - The "free" versions of MailMan, later changed to "Mail Manager"
  119.            to avoid a conflict with a commercial program of the same name.
  120.            Depending on what version of 1.x that you're running, it may
  121.            or may not be a relative piece of cake to updgrade.
  122.  
  123.            v1.24 and below:  The hot and furious early days of the door.
  124.                  Formats and filenames changed on a regular basis.  File
  125.                  formats didn't settle down until v1.30.  You will have to
  126.                  install "Plus" from scratch if you are upgrading from
  127.                  one of these early releases.

  129.            v1.30 through current version (1.35):  It is relatively
  130.                  painless to upgrade your existing installation.  See
  131.                  below.
  132.  
  133.     v2.x - The first series of our shareware effort, hereafter referred
  134.            to as "Plus".  Versions 2.00 through 2.04 had no format changes
  135.            to the system files, so it makes no difference which one you
  136.            were running - updating from 2.x to 3.00 is the proverbial piece
  137.            of cake.

  140.    INITIAL STEPS
  141.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  143.    If you are upgrading from a version lower than 1.30, your best bet is
  144.    to set up Mail Manager +Plus+ from scratch.  The changes are simply
  145.    too extensive.
  146.  
  147.    With that out of the way, there are several things common to ALL upgrades
  148.    from v1.30 through 2.04:
  149.  
  150.       [ ] - Back up your Mail Manager directory!  It never hurts to play it
  151.             safe.
  152.  
  153.       [ ] - There are new main menu options.  If you have created custom
  154.             menus, change them to reflect the new options - de-compress
  155.             the file MAILMGR.MNU from 300-TXT.ZIP, and have a look at what
  156.             they are.  If you are using the default menus, just overwrite
  157.             your existing ones with MAILMGR*.MNU in 300-TXT.ZIP.
  158.  
  159.       [ ] - Since there are new main menu items, there are new items listed
  160.             in the Mail Manager help files.  Delete your old MAILMGR*.HLP
  161.             files, and use the new ones contained within 300-TXT.ZIP.
  162.             These help files have a new naming convention: MMGR*.HLP.
  163.             Do not rename them.
  164.  
  165.       [ ] - Overwrite all executables with the ones contained within
  166.             300-EXE.ZIP.  (You backed up your old ones, right?)
  167.  
  168.    That's it for the initial stuff.  Now, depending on which version you
  169.    were running:
  170.

  172.    UPGRADING FROM MAIL MANAGER V1.3x:
  173.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  175.    Although it is relatively painless to upgrade from v1.3x of Mail Manager,
  176.    please be aware that both the configuration file and user file
  177.    (MAILMGR.CFG and MAILMGR.USR) have changed in format, and the new MAILCFG
  178.    program will report that your old configuration file is corrupt.
  179.  
  180.    Run the supplied UPDATE.EXE against your existing configuration file,
  181.    then run the supplied UPDATUSR.EXE against your existing MAILMGR.USR
  182.    file.  MAKE SURE YOU RUN THESE UTILITIES FROM YOUR MAIL MANAGER DIRECTORY!
  183.    After you've run these utilities once, you can throw them away (UPDATE.EXE
  184.    and UPDATUSR.EXE).

  190.    After that, run the new MAILCFG.EXE and carefully look for changes,
  191.    especially in the conference edit screen.  You'll have to go into the
  192.    new manual if some of the options appear confusing.

  195.    UPGRADING FROM "PLUS" V2.0x:
  196.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  197.  
  198.    All you really need to do is run the new MAILCFG against your existing
  199.    configuration file, and save your changes when finished.  There is one
  200.    new option on the second screen of the main configuration, and two new
  201.    options in each conference.  Respectively, they are:
  202.  
  203.       - Allow G)oodbye and E)xpedite! options to drop DTR?  (Default = No)
  204.  
  205.       - Number of lines allowed in each message (Default = 99)
  206.  
  207.       - Conference description (no default)
  208.  
  209.    Now you can dig out the "other" documentation <g> and see what else you
  210.    can do with this package.
  211.

  213.    IF YOU'RE SETTING UP FOR THE FIRST TIME:
  214.    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

  216.    There is no such thing as a "QUICK INSTALL" for Mail Manager +Plus+,
  217.    although you can be up and running fairly easily by:
  218.  
  219.        - Creating a \MAILMGR directory off of your root,
  220.        - De-compressing the archives 300-EXE.ZIP and 300-TXT.ZIP there,
  221.        - Run MAILCFG.EXE, and follow the prompts, then...
  222.        - Follow standard procedure for adding a new door to your system
  223.          (DOORS.DEF, menus, etc. etc.)
  224.  
  225.    However, we do *NOT* recommend that you do it this way if you have
  226.    more than a handful of conferences, and plan to add or delete any
  227.    in the forseeable future.  A little advance planning *NOW* can save
  228.    you a world of grief later, and there are many customizable text
  229.    files that you may want to change.
  230.  
  231.    Mail Manager +Plus+ is a VERY involved door, with many capabilities,
  232.    and encompasses just about your entire RBBS-PC (and frontend mailer)
  233.    setup.  There is no substitue for having a printed copy of MAILMGR.DOC
  234.    handy.
  235.  
  236.    HISTORY.DOC lists all changes to the door since the release of the
  237.    v1.3x series of Mail Manager.
